Emergency phones can be called SOS phones or emergency connect phones.  Some are telephones that you pre-program emergency telephone numbers and message to 911 or a family member that the telephone automatically calls when the wearer pushes a button on the transmitter that may be worn on a lanyard around the neck, in a pocket, or a wrist watch-style transmitter. Others are a telephone that has a button the wearer pushes that connects them directly to 911 operators with no in-between contact.

These are great for seniors and elderly who live by themselves and gives an added measure of safety and peace of mind not only to them but also their relatives.  Many seniors are at risk of falling and an emergency alert phone can keep them from laying on a floor by themselves for an extended period of time when they can't contact help.  Also useful for anyone with a heart condition. or just advanced age.
